Heroes Wall Honors Local Veterans

Vet to Vet Maine President Lynn White, right, and Executive Director Susan Gold pose in front of the Volk Heroes Wall during opening ceremonies June 6.

Volk Packaging Corp.’s Heroes Wall at the company site at 11 Morin St., Biddeford, honors men and women who have served or currently serve in the U.S. armed forces. Family and friends can order a tile of black or gray granite etched with a customized message and/or photograph of a military service member. Larger tiles (8-1/2 inches by 11 inches) cost $150; smaller tiles (5 inches by 7 inches) are $100. Corporate or private sponsors cover the cost of tiles for those who cannot afford the fee. All proceeds from the wall are given to the Biddeford/Saco/Old Orchard Beach VFW.

At opening ceremonies on June 6, Derek Volk, president of Volk Packaging, said he was inspired to build the wall after viewing a beautiful war memorial in the small town of Abbot, Maine. “Why doesn’t every town have one of these,” he asked himself, then set out to build a memorial in Biddeford.

The wall—constructed with donations from area businesses—measures 50 feet long and almost 7 feet tall. It will honor 700 members of the armed forces when complete. Currently, the wall contains 200 tiles.

Vet to Vet Maine, which has its office at Volk Packaging, is represented on the wall by Vet to Vet volunteer Tom Heels.
