Navy veteran George Anderson, a Vet to Vet Maine participant, has a new roof for his Scarborough home of 53 years free of charge, thanks to a nationwide contest sponsored by Beacon of Hope, V2VME peer companion Brent Rolfe who nominated him, and a campaign by Vet2VetME participants and supporters who voted for him.

Beacon, an international roofing supply firm, donated the roofing materials and Horch Roofing, a Maine roofing company, supplied the labor for the project; IKO donated roofing accessories.

On May 18, 2022, Tony Eldridge of Beacon and Peter Horch of Horch Roofing were on hand as the Horch crew installed George’s roof and later, put a new roof on his garage. Both men said it was a privilege to be able to provide a new roof to a veteran.

“Veterans have given so much to all of us,” Eldridge said. Amazed at his good fortune, a grateful George and his buddy Brent watched as the work progressed. TV stations WGME, WMTW, and WCSH and a Portland Press Herald photographer recorded the event. There were smiles all around.
